Conference “‘Memories at the Margin’: Exploring the voices and memories of the suppressed, marginalised and silenced” (Bristol, 7–8 June 2018)

University of Bristol, 7–8 June 2018

This conference provides a space for an interdisciplinary analysis of themes related to ‘memories at the margin’. We particularly welcome submissions from postgraduate, independent and early-career researchers. The aim of this conference is to widen the traditional understanding of memory through an examination of the voices that are typically left out of local, national and international narratives. Held at the University of Bristol, the conference will bring together scholars working in disciplines including History, English, Modern Languages, Performing Arts, Archaeology, Architecture and Geography.

The conference will open with the launch of Rainbow Pilgrims portable exhibition on Thursday 7 June 2018. Rainbow Pilgrims is a landmark project that seeks to uncover the hidden history of LGBTQI migrants in the UK past and present.

The conference will include a Question Time panel to discuss how marginalised voices can be uncovered. The panel will include: Tony Kushner (Marcus Sieff Professor of the History of Jewish/non Jewish Relations, University of Southampton), Kathrin Pieren (Collections Manager and Curator at the Jewish Museum, London) and Surat-Shaan Knan (Project Manager for Rainbow Pilgrims). Panel chairs will include Tim Cole, John Foot, Grace Huxford, Josie McLellan and Sumita Mukherjee.

Interpretations of the theme might include:
